Oranžerie a skleník

Barokní oranžerie zůstala v Uherčicích až do poloviny 19. století, kdy hrabě Antonín Oktavián z Collalto rozhodl o výstavbě nové fíkovny a přesunutí oranžerie na současné místo.

The Orangery and Greenhouse

As early as in the Baroque period, virtually every aristocratic country seat featured orangeries that housed exotic plants during the winter months, and Uherčice Château was no exception. By 1770, gardeners employed by Count Vinciguerra Tommaso of Collalto had started using a wooden orangery, originally located in the vicinity of the French garden, to cultivate three hundred and forty orange and lemon trees, as well as laurels, jasmines, figs, erythrinas, passion fruits, aloes, roses, and myristicas, which supplied the manorial kitchen with much sought-after nutmeg and mace. The Baroque orangery remained at Uherčice until the mid-nineteenth century, when Count Ottavio Antonio of Collalto decided to build a new fig tree conservatory and to have the orangery moved to its current location. The underpinned wooden fig tree conservatory, leaning against the wall of the first courtyard, was constructed in 1844 by master joiner Jindřich Stumvoll in collaboration with Ferdinand Prager, a local carpenter. It is likely that the conservatory served its purpose until 1870, when Count Emanuel of Collalto initiated a substantial expansion of the existing orangery, which was remodelled into the present-day greenhouse by František Sika, a master mason from Dačice. In the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, the greenhouse-grown exotic fruit served the needs of the owners of the château and during their absence, it was sold to pastry shops and delicatessens in Znojmo, Dačice, and Slavonice.
